There is a parallel between the Israelites who, though they knew God spoke (because they heard him speak), chose the Law over the hearing of God speak ... and people since then who choose the Bible over the hearing of God speak today (though they know he speaks).

Dress it up between the cultures however folks may, look at the parallel. The modern mindset is the same as the Israel mindset. The end result is ... an overwhelming majoring of people want what is written over what is spoken. Yet the scriptures were written mostly about people who heard God speak to them personally. Often, very often, pulpits leave those parts out.
